A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a person Wednesday on Interstate 11 in downtown Las Vegas, officials said Thursday.
Authorities said in a press release that troopers were investigating a crash in the area when an unrelated vehicle approached “in a reckless manner” and struck a tractor trailer. Officials said on Wednesday the incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Despite attempts to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to comply and continued through the crash scene before driving toward a trooper and striking them and a nearby passenger vehicle.
During the crash, a trooper shot their firearm, according to Thursday’s release. The vehicle fled the scene and was later located at a local hospital.
The driver was taken into custody for medical treatment and a passenger in the vehicle later died, according to the Nevada State Police. The identity of the person killed will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office, police said.
The crash closed off northbound I-11 near Las Vegas Boulevard for several hours.
