A commercial building that partially collapsed last week in the central Las Vegas Valley has been deemed unsafe by authorities, and the owner will be required to hire an engineer to assess whether repairs are possible.
Three people were injured when a front section of the shopping mall collapsed in the 6100 block of West Flamingo Road near South Jones Boulevard. The commercial building housed a Subway, a Marco’s Pizza, a smoke shop and a vacant store front.
Clark County firefighters had to extricate three people trapped in the stores due to rubble from the collapse blocking the front entrances.
Clark County spokeswoman Jennifer Cooper said in an email that “the building has been declared a dangerous structure” in accordance with Clark County code.
The county’s building inspector also “red tagged” the property, Cooper said.
“The red tags that were posted around the damaged building declare that the structure has been deemed unsafe and that occupancy of the structure is unlawful without written permission of the Building Official,” Cooper said.
Cooper said the county will notify the owner of their responsibility to retain a Nevada-licensed structural engineer to evaluate the damage and recommend necessary repairs or improvements.
“It will be the owner’s responsibility to hire Nevada-registered design professionals to prepare plans for the required building permits for the repairs,” Cooper said.
It was not immediately clear who owns the building. The address where the collapse occurred did not identically match properties listed with online Clark County assessor property records. An inquiry as to who owns the building was pending with the county.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
