The late Cesar Chavez will no longer be the namesake of a Clark County park.
Weeks after his legacy was tarred with allegations that he was a sexual predator, the county has made official that the far east Las Vegas site will be named Mariachi Park.
The decision was affirmed Tuesday with a unanimous County Commission vote.
“Mariachi Park reflects the shared history between Mexico and Las Vegas and honors the generations who helped shape this community,” said Commissioner Tick Segerblom in a statement. “It also celebrates the growth of mariachi programs in our East Las Vegas schools and the students and educators who have kept this vibrant tradition alive.”
A ceremony to mark the renaming was scheduled for Saturday morning at the park, 1450 Radwick Drive.
Chavez’s legacy was roiled after a New York Times investigation unveiled accusations that the co-founder of The National Farm Workers Union had abused children and Latino icon and movement co-founder Dolores Huerta.
