LETTER: Luxury houses and water use

I read in a recent Review-Journal real estate section a piece headlined “Where luxury meets the sky.” The article pertains to a luxury residence offered for sale in MacDonald Highlands. It certainly looks like a beautiful home and for $22 million, it should be. One aspect of it caught my eye: “two pools, two spas and seven cascading waterfalls.” If you believe what you read in the RJ, you know that the water situation here is beyond dire. This home seems to represent a profligate and wanton disregard for our water crisis. One pool and spa not enough? Seven waterfalls? Evaporation in the desert will ensure that these sources need a lot of ongoing water.

I’d like to know how and why local politicians and water officials — who have all of us regular folk pulling out lawns and trees, trickling our meager gardens with drip systems, having quick showers, etc. — can approve and validate this kind of water consumption on this property. Multiply this house by all the other high-end homes in this valley, and you really have to scratch you head in amazement as to how this double standard is allowed to exist. It’s pathetic at best and disgusting at the very least.
