The Coronado boys soccer team, one of the most dominant in Nevada high school sports history, was forced to vacate its 2025 Class 5A state championship, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book.
Coronado defeated Hug 2-1 last November to win its third straight 5A state title, but the NIAA boys soccer record book shows “vacated” on the line of 2025 5A state champion.
Coronado soccer coach Dustin Barton said Thursday the program has moved on from the decision, and that he and the school had no further comment.
The NIAA declined to explain why Coronado’s title was vacated.
“The NIAA does not comment on any actions taken toward its member schools. Those communications are between the NIAA and the school(s),” an NIAA spokesperson said in an email.
Coronado finished 2025 with a 25-0 record, and its win in last year’s state title game was the team’s 55th straight victory, which was a state record. The record is not reflected in the NIAA’s record for most consecutive matches without a defeat, just the team’s 30-game unbeaten streak from the end of the 2023 season though 2024.
On Wednesday, Palo Verde defeated Coronado 2-1 in the Cougars’ first on-field defeat since 2023. Coronado entered the game on a 59-game unbeaten streak (58-0-1).
Last year, Coronado scored a state-record 181 goals while outscoring its opponents 181-12. Coronado’s mark of 181 goals from last year is not included in the state record book. The Cougars recorded 14 shutouts last year.
The team this offseason graduated nine starters and most if its core group that contributed to the team’s three-year dominant run. According to the NIAA record book, its most recent update was in May 2026, several months after Coronado won the title.
For Coronado, it’s the second violation in the span of a school year to impact playoff teams. In May, the Coronado baseball team was pulled out of the Class 5A Southern Region tournament bracket. No reason was given by the NIAA or the school about the removal.
Coronado had lost an opening-round baseball game and dropped to the losers bracket. Coronado’s spots in the bracket were replaced with the word “Vacant.”
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
