Because of our political folly, China builds while we flounder. Since 1960, China and the United States have followed different paths. China has initiated two major wars: costing an estimated $20 billion to $50 billion (adjusted to today’s dollars). The United States has fought several major wars since 1960. Costs estimated at $6 trillion to $8 trillion.
Because of this, China has been able to build major mega-projects that include the Three Gorges Dam (world’s largest hydroelectric dam), the South–North Water Pipeline Transfer Project, the world’s largest high-speed rail network and an National Expressway Network. It has constructed dozens of nuclear reactors and the Belt and Road Initiative exceeding $1 trillion.
The United States, by contrast, has highways, bridges, dams, airports, water systems and the electric grid built between 1950 and 1980. Aging water pipes cause hundreds of thousands of main breaks annually, increasing contamination risks. The Southwest needs a new water source. The electric grid, designed decades ago, struggles with modern renewable energy and rising demand. Transit systems and public facilities face maintenance backlogs.
If we want America First, it’s time to stop the folly of war and instead invest the otherwise wasted trillions for our common good.
