A Clark County School District campus monitor who was facing criminal charges related to allegations of sexual misconduct with a pupil has been found incompetent to stand trial, according to court records.
District Judge Christy Craig ruled Friday that Antonio Vaughn, 43, was not capable of assisting counsel or understanding the charges against him, which include lewdness with a child under 14, child abuse, contacting a pupil by person of authority for sex, luring a child and destroying or concealing evidence, according to court records.
Vaughn was arrested in April after police said he kissed a 13-year-old girl on the grounds of Schofield Middle School in Las Vegas and on, multiple occasions, was warned against contacting students via social media.
An Order of Commitment filed Tuesday said Vaughn was evaluated by two doctors, Greg Harder and Dodge Slagle, who indicated Vaughn is not competent, that he is dangerous to himself and to others, and that commitment is required to determine his ability to receive treatment or attain competence.
The court ordered that Vaughn be transferred to the custody of the Nevada Department of Human Services for detention and treatment, according to court records. Vaughn’s criminal proceedings will be suspended while health officials can determine whether his competency can be restored.
The order did not state where Vaughn would receive treatment. Vaughn was in custody at the Clark County Detention Center as of Tuesday morning, according to online jail records.
Vaughn, who started working for the district as a campus safety monitor in 2018, was placed on unpaid leave after his arrest, the district said previously. A CCSD spokesperson said Tuesday that Vaughn was fired in April.
Court records show Vaughn is being represented by attorney Jack Buchanan, who could not immediately be reached for comment.
