The Suncoast opened in 2000, but the Boyd Gaming hotel-casino is essentially brand new as it nears completion of a major multiyear renovation project.
“It’s a top to bottom modernization of the entire property,” Boyd Gaming spokesperson David Strow said during a walk through the upgraded casino. “The design had just become out of date. It was a darker design and we wanted to open it up and make it lighter.
“Brighter, lighter — that’s the direction that casino design is heading.”
The Summerlin-area resort started the property-wide transformation, which was completed in sections, in late 2023 when it opened a new high-limit slot room. It unveiled a new stadium-style sportsbook in 2024, a new bingo room in 2025, and in July debuted a new food hall and Bar SC, a 70-seat raised center bar.
“Customers gravitate toward the center bars. It’s a high-energy location where you can see across the entire casino floor,” Strow said. “When we finished Bar SC, it really opened up the entire casino floor. Now it’s one connected gaming experience. This was a very important part of the renovation project.”
A new cashier’s cage and upgraded bar in the back of the casino also were part of the project, while renovations of the hotel rooms, gift shop and bowling center are ongoing.
“The renovation of the hotel rooms is kind of the last big step,” Strow said. “That will be done by the end of the year.”
The Suncoast, which was also repainted and added a new marquee on the corner of Alta Drive and Rampart Blvd., will host a grand reopening celebration on Sept. 29.
“This is a competitive market, so we had to step up our game,” Strow said. “We had to offer our customers a reason to pick this property over those strong competitors in the area. That’s why, ultimately, we made this investment.
“We’re extremely happy with how it turned out and very optimistic about its potential.”
Boyd didn’t disclose the cost of the project.
“This is an investment in the northwest Las Vegas community that Suncoast has proudly served for more than 25 years now,” said Rick Goldstein, senior vice president of operations for Boyd Gaming, in a statement. “We are extremely pleased with the response we have seen so far, giving us confidence in the long-term potential of the all-new Suncoast.
New food, drink options
The Suncoast opened its Quick Bites food hall in the former buffet space that now features Steak ‘n Shake and Huey Magoo’s Chicken Tenders. It also opened a Starbucks in the former ice cream shop space near the front entrance.
“We actually have dedicated parking for folks who want to come in and grab a mobile order, so you can just park near the front entrance, run in, get your coffee and leave,” Strow said. “It’s a nice amenity for people in the neighborhood.”
There is also a new registration desk near the entrance across from Starbucks.
“This is just a much more upgraded and welcoming experience for guests when they arrive,” Strow said. “If you remember the old Suncoast, it’s remarkable how much work’s been done there.”
Du-par’s restaurant was refreshed, while William B’s Steakhouse replaced Salvatore’s Italian Restaurant on the casino’s restaurant row in late 2023.
“We’re trying to offer a more high-end dining experience for the neighborhood,” Strow said. “We’re right next to Summerlin.”
William B’s also supplanted SC Prime Steakhouse, which was located on the second floor of the casino and closed in late 2023.
Suncoast shuffle
Moving the bingo room from the second floor to the first floor in the former sportsbook space in the back of the casino near the movie theater nearly doubled the meeting space on the second floor.
“This is important because we do see a lot of demand from the local area for a meeting space option off the Strip,” Strow said.
The new 9,170 square-foot bingo room features 406 seats, a snack bar, a separate glass-enclosed smoking area and a 17-foot bouncing bingo ball chandelier.
“We brought it down to the first floor to make it a lot more convenient for customers,” Strow said. “It’s a much more modern and larger space for our customers. Bingo is extremely popular here in the Suncoast. We have a lot of very loyal and regular bingo customers, so we had to step up our game and offer an updated offering.”
The new Boyd Sports sportsbook opened at the start of the 2024 football season. The massive book is now near the front entrance in a former showroom space featuring a 15½-foot-tall wraparound HD screen in an amphitheater design above 60 leather seats and long leather booths.
Couches can be reserved on Open Table. A food and beverage minimum is required. Additional seating is available at a 55-foot-long bar at the book, which also features 12 betting kiosks.
“We didn’t have enough shows in here to justify the space that we were devoting to it,” Strow said. “What customers are now looking for is a viewing experience they can’t get at home and that’s what we offer here.”
