The Metropolitan Police Department has taken a man into custody in connection with a beating in downtown Las Vegas that left an elderly man dead Thursday evening, police said.
Lt. Monique Rodriguez said that police responded to a call near Main Street and East Bridger Avenue around 6:15 p.m. about a man battered in the street and in need of medical assistance. Despite attempts from law enforcement and emergency personnel to render aid, the victim, described as a man in his 60s, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
While the homicide investigation is still in its preliminary stages, Rodriguez said police learned that the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, approached the victim and after a short conversation, started the physical altercation.
“With the assistance of security personnel in the area, officers were able to take him into custody,” Rodriguez said at a briefing Thursday evening.
Rodriguez said investigators had not yet determined whether the suspect and victim knew one another or what they disagreed about.
