Clark County residents mourn the loss of a heroic Metropolitan Police Department officer who was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday. The death of 30-year-old Austin “Zade” Abdelnabi offers a sobering and tragic reminder of the risks the men and women in brown take each and every day in service to the community and to keeping local residents safe.
“Here’s a hero that served this country, was awarded at the top levels, a hero that came to Metro, responded to a call for service of a man with a gun, was ambushed as he gets out of his car, and he gave his life and sacrificed for this community,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Wednesday. “I don’t think enough can be said for the brave men and women that strap on this gun belt, put this uniform on and go out there and answer that call.”
The confrontation occurred near Charleston Boulevard and U.S. Highway 95 on the east side of town. Mr. Abdelnabi and other officers had responded to calls Metro received about a man walking in the area while erratically waving a gun. When the officers confronted the suspect, he opened fire, striking Mr. Abdelnabi, who was transported to UMC, where he died. The suspect was also killed in the exchange.
Mr. Abdelnabi had been with the department since November 2023. He had served in the Marine Corps — receiving numerous medals — before earning a criminal justice degree from Clemson University in South Carolina, his home state. His record reflects a deep devotion to serving others.
“He believed in protecting others, even when it came at great personal risk,” Mr. Abdelnabi’s brother, Ryan, wrote on social media. “That wasn’t just his profession — it was his character. He lived a life defined by courage, honor, loyalty and selfless service.”
Most Clark County residents have minimal contact with the police, often taking for granted the sacrifices and dangers these men and women face when they don the uniform and take to the streets to protect and serve. That they do so every day not knowing what’s around the corner or behind the next door is a testament to the valor, resolve and grit of those who choose this honorable and noble profession.
Mr. Abdelnabi served his family, his country and the Las Vegas community. He sacrificed his life for the safety of others. Southern Nevadans grieve for his family and lament the death of a true hero.
