Gov. Joe Lombardo admonished an audience member prior to President Donald Trump’s appearance at Red Rock Resort Wednesday after he booed the mention of a fallen Las Vegas police officer.
Before Trump’s speech, Lombardo addressed the audience and was preparing a moment of silence for Austin Abdelnabi, a Metropolitan Police Department officer who was killed in the line of duty Tuesday.
The man booed after Lombardo stumbled over Abdelnabi’s last name. Several audience members were heard saying “no!” to the man before Lombardo said, “No, no, we’re not booing him. He’s the officer that passed away here recently.”
Lombardo then asked the crowd to take part in a moment of silence in Abdelnabi’s memory.
Trump, who spoke after Lombardo and then appeared with him onstage following his speech, also praised Abdelnabi, calling him “an incredible young man.”
Abdelnabi was fatally wounded while responding to a call about a man waving a firearm in east Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon. Metro Capt. Adam Seely said the suspect “immediately opened fire upon officers,” and Abdelnabi was shot during the exchange of fire.
Abdelnabi was rushed to University Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries.
According to Abdelnabi’s LinkedIn page, he served in the Marine Corps from August 2014 to August 2018. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Abdelnabi was with Metro since November 2023.
