The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Board of Control voted to appoint Sean FitzSimons as the interim executive director at an emergency board meeting Thursday.

FitzSimons will fill in for outgoing executive director Timothy Jackson beginning Monday. Jackson announced his resignation this month after two years in the position, and his last day will be Saturday.

FitzSimons is entering his second year working for the NIAA as an assistant director overseeing coaches education, compliance and postseason events.

“I’m looking forward to keeping the organization moving in a positive direction,” FitzSimons said in a release. “I appreciate the trust the Board of Control has put in our staff.”

Before joining the NIAA, FitzSimons was a teacher and coach at Virgin Valley for 16 years. FitzSimons, from 2017-2025, was the athletic director, administrator and teacher at Lincoln County while also serving as a liaison to the board of control.

The board chose FitzSimons over Emilio Estevez Jr., a former U.S. Marine with no previous experience in high school athletics. Cimarron-Memorial principal Colin McNaught was the lone board member who did not vote to approve FitzSimons as the interim.

The NIAA is conducting a national search to fill the full-time position with the hopes of having the new executive director start by Nov. 2. The board will interview final candidates at the Sept. 22 and 23 fall meetings.
