New hotel-casino project approved for Las Vegas’ failed Ferris-wheel site

Clark County commissioners approved plans for a new resort on the site of Las Vegas’ failed Ferris-wheel project.

The commission on Wednesday gave the green light to developer Eli Applebaum’s proposal for a 752-room hotel-casino project along Las Vegas Boulevard across from Mandalay Bay.

Applebaum purchased his nearly 12-acre site on the south Strip in April for $70 million from a group that acquired the spread years ago through a bankruptcy case.

The tract includes vacant land, a few small buildings, and the remains of the never-finished SkyVue observation-wheel project: two giant concrete columns that have been sticking out of the ground for more than a decade.

Overall, Applebaum’s plans call for a heart-shaped hotel tower covered with a heart-shaped LED screen; a covered pedestrian plaza, similar to downtown’s Fremont Street Experience; and a midair restaurant that incorporates the leftover towers, county records show.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
