Flavor Flav’s SHE Weekend celebrating U.S. women’s Winter Olympic athletes raised nearly $140,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help fund the multi-day event.
The GoFundMe proceeds will also go toward providing financial support to the athletes being celebrated this weekend in Las Vegas, according to the fundraiser’s page. Other companies sponsored the weekend, such as MGM Resorts and Delta Air Lines, offering everything from free flights to comped hotel rooms.
The festivities kicked off on Thursday night with Flavor Flav leading a parade featuring the U.S. Olympians and Paralympians down a portion of the Strip to Toshiba Plaza, where a celebration and free concert including rap group Public Enemy occurred. An estimated 6,000 people greeted the athletes.
“I’m over grateful to be the one in this position to be able to bring these athletes out here and celebrate their gold wins,” Flavor Flav said Thursday. “This is the way they should be celebrating. I just want to thank everybody that came out to support and everything and I want to thank everyone that reached out, that wanted to be part of this. … It means so, so much.”
The weekend will continue with events planned at various resorts and concerts, including the Backstreet Boys at Sphere and the Ed Sheeran show at Allegiant Stadium.
“I think I’m most excited for Ed Sheeran,” U.S. women’s hockey team player Alex Carpenter said Thursday. “I think that’s going to be awesome.”
