The highly anticipated matchup between the Las Vegas Aces and the Indiana Fever on Sunday at T-Mobile Arena could be missing two of the WNBA’s biggest stars.
The Fever announced Friday that guard Caitlin Clark will miss the game after aggravating a lingering back injury during Indiana’s June 24 contest against the Phoenix Mercury.
Clark leads the Fever with 8.2 assists per game and ranks second on the team in scoring with 21.2 points, trailing fellow All-Star starter Kelsey Mitchell, who is averaging 21.6.
Indiana hopes Clark will return during its back-to-back on July 8-9 after she returned to practice on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Aces’ A’ja Wilson missed her second consecutive game on Friday night against the Chicago Sky after rolling her ankle in the fourth quarter of the team’s 107-99 victory over Chicago on June 28.
Aces coach Becky Hammon initially expected Wilson to miss only a few days but now considers the four-time MVP “day-to-day,” leaving her status for Sunday’s matchup in doubt.
“(Wilson) is tough,” Hammon said. “I want to protect her as much as possible. She really wants to play, but we are not going to rush it.”
Wilson has missed just 16 games during her WNBA career since being selected No. 1 overall by Las Vegas in 2018.
Fresh off earning her 15th Western Conference Player of the Month award, she leads the league in scoring at 25.7 points per game.
