LETTER: Way over the top

I read in the Thursday Review-Journal that Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill intends to confiscate cars that are caught doing illegal driving on local roads and have them “shredded.” This is so unbelievably stupid and demonstrative and wasteful that I’m flabbergasted.

My thoughts go back to a scene from the 1965 James Bond movie “Goldfinger,” in which the villain Auric Goldfinger has a brand, new Lincoln Continental destroyed in that fashion. With a body in the trunk.

What will Mr. McMahill do if the car is a new Ferrari or Lamborghini — or even a high-priced American car worth $200,000 to $500,000? Will he really destroy it? Is he that simple and mindless?

The story said that Nevada forfeiture laws allow this. How nice. Give me a license to demolish and really teach them guys how tough I am. What if the car still has a bank loan and lien? Does the bank deserve to have its interest evaporated?

How about just a good stiff fine for the violating driver instead — and maybe seven days in the Clark County Hotel, including the fine room service?
