Clark County to open cooling centers amid March heat wave

Clark County on Tuesday said it was activating cooling stations at dozens of community centers, libraries and other public structures a day after the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for the area.

The cooling stations will be open from Thursday through Saturday, and their hours will vary depending on the location, the county said in a news release Tuesday. The extreme heat warning, according to the weather service, will be in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 8 p.m. Sunday and could bring record-setting high temperatures to the Las Vegas Valley.

The stations are open to anyone in need of respite from the heat, the county said. Additional information can be found at Help Hope Home, the Southern Nevada Homelessness Continuum of Care’s website, the county said.

Cooling stations will include several locations in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson. They include:

Las Vegas

  • Courtyard Homeless Resource Center; 314 Foremaster Ln.; open 24 hours daily; accommodates pets in a carrier or on a leash.
  • The Salvation Army; 35 W. Owens Ave.; open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily
  • Cambridge Recreation Center; 393 Cambridge St.; open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
  • Pearson Community Center; 1625 West Carey Ave.; open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
  • Whitney Recreation Center; 5712 E. Missouri Ave.; open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
  • Walnut Recreation Center; 3075 N. Walnut Road; open 7 a.m.-6p .m. Monday-Friday.
  • Hollywood Recreation Center; 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd.; open 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday.

North Las Vegas

  • Alexander Library; 1755 W. Alexander Road; open 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • Neighborhood Recreation Center; 1638 N. Bruce St.; Open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Silver Mesa Recreation Center; 4025 Allen Ln.; open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

Henderson

  • Downtown Senior Center; 27 E. Texas Ave.; open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.
  • West Henderson Library; 3243 Bicentennial Pkwy.; open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • Green Valley Library; 2797 N. Green Valley Pkwy.; open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • James I. Gibson Library; 100 W. Lake Mead Pkwy.; open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • Paseo Verde Library; 280 S. Green Valley Pkwy.; open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Laughlin

  • Colorado River Food Bank; 240 Laughlin Civic Drive; open 8 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Monday-Friday; accommodates pets in a carrier or on a leash.
