There has been discussion about moving school start times later, such as to 8:30 a.m. But schools should continue starting earlier, around 7 a.m., because it allows students to have more time in the afternoon and evening for homework, sports, clubs, jobs and time with their families.
If school starts later, dismissal would be pushed further into the afternoon or evening, which could make schedules more difficult. Many students participate in extracurricular activities, and later dismissal times could push practices, games and events later into the night. Ending school later could make it harder for students to balance schoolwork, activities and other responsibilities.
I believe schools should keep earlier start times so students finish their school day earlier and still have time for important commitments outside the classroom. While sleep is important, school schedules should also consider extracurricular activities, transportation and family routines.
I hope community leaders and school officials consider all of these factors when discussing possible changes to start times.
