Basic’s baseball team rolled to a 10-0 home win over Coronado on Tuesday. The game ended in the sixth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Basic (3-1, 1-0 Class 5A Desert League) scored seven runs in the second inning to create separation from Coronado (5-3, 0-1).
Saint Mary’s (California) commit Johnny Villarreal threw five shutout innings with six strikeouts to get the win.
Texas A&M commit Matthew Kelley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Wolves.
Before the game, Basic held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its first game on its new field, and the team handed out championship rings for winning the 5A state title last season.
The two teams will play again at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Basic because of renovations at Coronado’s field.
