Ron Mitchell’s Sunday letter arguing that charging the wealthy a 5 percent tax would pay off the national debt is a little off. He says the debt would be paid off within 20 years, but that’s only if the federal government stops spending every dollar that is collected from all the taxpayers. No more welfare, SNAP benefits, free school lunches and subsidies for homebuyers. Most importantly, our military would have to shut down just to pay off the debt.
I personally do not want to see what would happen in this country if that happened.
We need to quit thinking that the rich are responsible to pay for it all. Besides, they already supply good-paying jobs for the rest of us.
