There is a new No. 1 high school football team in MaxPreps’ national rankings.

Bishop Gorman has taken over the top spot in MaxPreps’ high school football rankings on Monday after the then-No. 2-ranked Gaels defeated previous No. 1 St. John Bosco (California) 38-28 on Friday at Fertitta Field.

St. John Bosco has dropped to No. 5. St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) is No. 2, followed by St. Frances Academy (Maryland) and IMG Academy (Florida), respectively.

On Friday, Gorman held a 21-0 halftime lead over St. John Bosco before the Braves tied the score at 28-28 in the fourth quarter. Gorman QB Ace Amina threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Corey Hinton Jr. to give the Gaels the lead. The Gaels are 3-0 all-time against St. John Bosco.

Gorman has also moved up to No. 1 in High School Football America’s national top 300 rankings and the Gaels are ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas, Buford (Georgia), St. John Bosco and IMG Academy.

In USA Today’s rankings, Gorman moved up to No. 2. The Gaels were ranked No. 3 behind previously-ranked No. 2 St. John Bosco (now No. 5) and top-ranked IMG Academy.

IMG Academy defeated Lone Peak (Utah) 59-3 on Friday. Gorman plays at Lone Peak on Sept. 4. The Gaels defeated Lone Peak 35-14 last year in a game that was called in the third quarter after multiple Lone Peak players came onto the field in a sideline altercation.

The Gaels conclude their out-of-state schedule at Mater Dei (California) on Sept. 18. Mater Dei is ranked No. 8 by USA Today and No. 9 by MaxPreps. Gorman lost to Mater Dei 27-24 last year at home and is 0-5 all-time against the Monarchs.

It’s likely that after the Open Division state championship game in November, Gorman could play other highly-ranked national opponents in the Overtime Nationals tournament.

A report from Rivals said the event will expand to a four-team tournament for the top high school teams. Last December, the Overtime Nationals was a one-game de-facto national championship game between St. Frances (Maryland) and Corner Canyon (Utah).

When Gorman announced its 2026 schedule in June on the team’s social media accounts, it included the Overtime Nationals, with its date listed as “to be determined” at the end of the schedule before the post was deleted and updated to not include the Overtime Nationals.
