As the policy of “Housing First” comes under increasing scrutiny, the story of Taja Reese and the Beals-Henderson Pointe development illustrates that affordable housing is still the best solution to tackling homelessness (“Opening for new affordable housing community in Las Vegas honors civil rights leaders,” July 16 Review-Journal). A secure and safe place to call home enables individuals to move forward with their lives, whether that’s seeking the medical help that they need or finding employment.
Many people are much closer to the precipice of falling into homelessness than they realize, with an unexpected bill or the loss of a loved one pushing them over the edge. However, the availability of accessible accommodation acts as a safety net ensuring that no one ends up trapped in the cycle of long-term homelessness.
This new housing project will serve the local needs of those in the Las Vegas community, but it also sets a precedent and blueprint for the wider United States and beyond.
