Previously ineligible low-income Las Vegas seniors may now qualify for utility tax and sewer fee rebates.
On Monday, Las Vegas officials announced that they are revamping the city’s current Utility Tax and Sewer Rebate Program for 2025 dues.
The program, designed to reimburse low-income Las Vegans aged 60 and older for franchise taxes paid on local utility bills and a portion of the annual sewer bill for a primary residence within city limits, is now open to those making less than $23,475, or $31,725 for a two-person household.
When the current program was introduced in January, applicants were required to bring in an income less than $16,500, or $18,900 for a household of two.
The city code tied to eligibility requirements had not been updated since 1996, officials said in a statement.
“Recently, the municipal code was updated by the City Council to tie eligibility to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services federal poverty guidelines, which are updated regularly, and allows the city to extend the filing date for application of such refunds,” a statement from the city read. “Because this change should open eligibility for refunds to many more people, the city of Las Vegas has reopened the application period for 2025 taxes to be refunded to those who qualify.”
According to the news release, the franchise tax rebate applies to taxes paid on NV Energy for electric power, Cox Communications or Lumen Technologies — formerly CenturyLink — for telephone bills and Southwest Gas for natural gas charges in 2025.
Applicants must show copies of their 2025 bills, photo ID, proof of income, proof of bill payment and other documents to qualify.
New applications can be filed with the city between Aug. 1 and Oct. 15, and must be made at one of six locations throughout Las Vegas, including Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, Doolittle Active Adult Center, Dula Community Center, East Las Vegas Community Center, Howard Lieburn Active Adult Center and Stupak Community Center. Application forms are not available online.
Low-income Las Vegas seniors making less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level who are homeowners can also apply for a “partial rebate” of the annual sewer bill on their primary residence in Las Vegas.
“Bring copies of your bill(s) and proof payment for the 2025 sewer charges,” the news release said.
