Grizzlies, Warriors advance to final

The Memphis Grizzlies built an early lead and never looked back en route to a 101-90 victory over the Houston Rockets in an NBA Summer League semifinal Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Memphis will play the Golden State Warriors — a 92-88 winner over the Los Angeles Lakers in the other semifinal Saturday — at 6 p.m. Sunday for the Summer League title.

Cedric Coward led Memphis with 28 points and grabbed six rebounds with five assists. Memphis led 24-9 after the first quarter.

Cameron Boozer, the third overall pick in last month’s draft, started for Memphis and played 31 minutes after three of the other top four picks — AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Caleb Wilson — all ended their Summer League runs early. On his 19th birthday, Boozer scored 12 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added five assists.

Quadir Copeland led Houston with 24 points on a 9 of 13 shooting effort. Daishen Nix, who played high school basketball at Trinity International, added 16 points for the Rockets.

In the other semifinal, Golden State made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 15 seconds to outlast the Lakers. Graham Ike and LJ Cryer each scored 16 points to pace the Warriors. Adou Thiero led the Lakers with 18 points.

Stars of the day

Malik Reneau, Orlando Magic

The second-to-last day of the NBA Summer League opened with a battle between Boston and Orlando, but with the help of Malik Reneau off the bench, the Magic left Las Vegas with a win.

Reneau scored 19 points in 18 minutes off the bench as Orlando fended off Boston 103-97. The 6-foot-9 forward grabbed three rebounds and was 6 of 7 from the floor and made all three of his 3-pointers.

Orlando outscored Boston 36-23 in the third quarter to overcome a brief deficit and hold on for the win. Reneau was undrafted out of Miami and a first-team All-ACC selection for the Hurricanes last season. He averaged 18.9 points per game for Miami last year after spending his first three seasons of college at Indiana.

Brayden Burries, Milwaukee Bucks

The dramatics spilled over to the Cox Pavilion for the Milwaukee Bucks meeting with the Philadelphia 76ers. Brayden Burries, the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, capped off a 27-point performance by scoring the game-winning basket on a layup with 1.8 seconds left to give the Bucks a 96-94 victory.

Burries scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and went the length of the floor on an in-bounds pass to drive past the Philadelphia defense for the game winner. Burries, a 6-foot-4 guard, made 9 of 18 shots and added five assists and four rebounds.

Milwaukee selected Burries out of Arizona. In his lone college season in Tucson, Burries averaged 16.1 points per game and was named a first-team All-Big 12 selection.

Josh Camden, Washington Wizards

Undrafted free agent John Camden left a lasting impression for Washington in its Summer League finale. Camden scored 22 points to help the Wizards defeat the Atlanta Hawks 91-83.

Camden, a 6-foot-8 forward out of California, made 7 of 15 field goals, 4 of 8 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds for the Wizards, who led 24-15 after the first quarter.

As a senior last year, Camden averaged 13.8 points with the Golden Bears. Camden also played collegiately at Memphis, Virginia Tech and Delaware.
