Athletics pitching coach Scott Emerson has been fired, the team announced Monday.
Bullpen coach Dan Hubbs will take over on an interim basis for the rest of the season and run one of the worst bullpens in Major League Baseball. Emerson was their pitching coach since 2017 and has been with the franchise since 2002.
However, the pitching staff hit their lowest mark in years at the All-Star break, owning a 5.21 ERA, second to the Colorado Rockies (5.44). The breaking point appeared to be this weekend when the A’s allowed 14 runs Friday to the Chicago White Sox and nine on Sunday.
Also, the bullpen has been struggling to find a closer since trading Mason Miller to the San Diego Padres last year. They have 18 blown saves.
