Daniel Negreanu upstaged the first day of the World Series of Poker Main Event on Thursday.
The superstar pro won the $100,000 buy-in High Roller Pot-limit Omaha event at Paris Las Vegas, defeating Artur Martirosian of Russia in heads-up play to claim the $2.25 million first prize.
It is Negreanu’s eighth career WSOP bracelet, which are awarded for tournament wins, moving him into a tie for 10th on the all-time list with Nick Schulman.
Negreanu was low in chips at the five-handed final table after the first 30 minutes of play but rebuilt his stack to get heads-up with Martirosian. He faced a 3-to-2 deficit but quickly took control.
On the final hand, Negreanu flopped a straight and his opponent was drawing dead after the turn. Negreanu raised his arms in triumph and hugged his wife, Amanda, on the rail as the crowd chanted his name.
Martirosian, a four-time bracelet winner who was looking for his second win of this series, earned $1.47 million for his runner-up finish.
