A gunman suspected of shooting two people in the northeast Las Vegas Valley, killing one, was arrested after he scanned his driver’s license at a nearby casino shortly after the attack, police said.
The Metropolitan Police Department said the decision by Abdul Muhammad, 39, to scan his license at a Dotty’s near the June 18 shooting scene in the 4900 block of East Craig Road, near North Nellis Boulevard, helped police identify him as the suspected gunman.
Muhammad is charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and owning or possessing a gun by a prohibited person.
Police said Muhammad is charged in the killing of a man identified in a police report as Marquis Perkins. A female acquaintance of Perkins was shot in the leg but survived.
Police said in an arrest report for Muhammad that Perkins, the woman and her 2-year-old child were in a silver Mercedes and had gone to a parking lot on East Craig just after 9 p.m. Perkins and the woman intended to do laundry at a laundromat there when a man she knew as “D” approached and started talking to the woman about T-shirts he was selling.
“Marquis took offense and told D not to ‘speak with his girl’ and to talk directly to him,” police said in the report. “The two began to argue and D explained he meant no disrespect but made a comment about Marquis overreacting as he walked away.”
Perkins and the woman continued to unload their belongings from their vehicle when a flurry of shots rang out.
“She looked up to see D in a shooting stance, with his arms extend, shooting at Marquis,” police said.
Perkins was shot multiple times. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and survived. The child was not injured.
Police said the shooting was captured on video surveillance from a nearby liquor store. Video surveillance from the Dotty’s in the area also showed the gunman shortly after the shooting, walking into the casino where he changed shirts. A clerk at the casino also scanned the individual’s drivers license, which led police to identify Muhammad as the suspect, police said.
Muhammad has a prior criminal history. At the time of the shooting, police said, he was on probation for a similar incident in which he discharged a firearm in the same area where Perkins was killed. Muhammad is also a five-time convicted felon with priors for attempted burglary, possession of a firearm by ex-felon, robbery, attempt burglary and battery.
Muhammad is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. His next appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court is scheduled for July 9.
