The family of the Las Vegas city worker who police say was killed by a co-worker plans to remember him in a funeral next month.
Joey McLean was 41 when, according to authorities, 31-year-old Brysen Kim fatally shot him on June 12 at a maintenance yard in the 400 block of North Seventh Street, near East Mesquite Avenue.
McLean will be laid to rest on July 11, according to a statement from his family shared by his sister, Starr McLean. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in downtown Las Vegas.
“The family of Joey McLean invites those whose lives were touched by him to join us in celebrating his life,” the statement read. “Following his tragic and senseless death, we are gathering to honor the man he was — a beloved son, brother, family member, friend and dedicated City of Las Vegas employee.”
Prior to the fatal shooting, McLean and Kim were engaged in a monthslong feud, which primarily included human resources complaints from both men about one another, according to an initial assessment of the incident by city officials.
Kim’s arrest report states he told Metropolitan Police Department officers that he complained repeatedly about McLean harassing him. McLean’s wife, Monica McLean, has disputed the harassment claims.
“We feel it is important that the public knows Joey was so much more than the limited picture that has been presented,” Starr McLean said. “He was not only a Catholic and a stepfather. He was a devoted son, a beloved brother, a loyal friend, a cherished family member and a man whose life touched countless people. That is how we want Joey to be remembered.”
On the day of the shooting, McLean and Kim got into a verbal dispute that turned physical and led to Kim pulling out a gun and shooting McLean, according to police.
Kim is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center, according to online records. He is due in court Tuesday, Las Vegas Justice Courts records show.
Meanwhile, McLean’s family is expressing gratitude for the Las Vegas community.
”While our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the overwhelming support, prayers and kindness shown by the Las Vegas community during this unimaginable time,” the statement continued. “All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend as we come together to remember his life, mourn his loss and stand united in honoring his memory. The McLean family respectfully asks for continued prayers and privacy as we navigate this profound loss.”
