
The Las Vegas PWHL expansion franchise has hired Kim Weiss as its first coach, the team announced Monday.
Weiss spent the last two seasons with the Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.
“It’s an honor to become a head coach at the highest level of the women’s game, and I couldn’t be more excited to join PWHL Las Vegas,” Weiss said in a statement.
During her time in Colorado, she became the second woman in NHL/AHL history to serve as a full-time assistant coach, having begun as a video assistant before her promotion in 2026.
“I am thrilled to welcome Kim Weiss as the first Head Coach of PWHL Las Vegas. Throughout her coaching career, Kim has consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to develop players, build strong team cultures, and achieve success at the highest levels of the game,” said PWHL Las Vegas general manager Dominique DiDia.
“Her accomplishments across both the NCAA and AHL speak for themselves, and her hockey expertise and communication skills make her one of the most respected leaders in the sport. Her values align perfectly with the culture we are building in Las Vegas.”
While with the Colorado Eagles, the team made back-to-back Calder Cup playoff appearances and won the Pacific Division title in 2025.
The Potomac, Maryland, native also was an assistant coach with the Trinity College men’s team in 2023, when the program finished with a 25-4-1 record. She became the first woman to work as an assistant coach in NCAA Division III men’s hockey.
Weiss also played at had a playing career of her own at Trinity College, where she was a teammate of DiDia and set program records for career points and goals as a forward.

Weiss joins the franchise days prior to the PWHL entry draft on June 17, Las Vegas holds the No. 5 overall pick.
