WASHINGTON — The UFC is getting a preview of what logistical challenges could lie ahead for its first outdoor event on Sunday at the White House.
Friday night’s news conference on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, scheduled for 8:15 p.m. local time, is currently in a weather delay.
The region is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9 p.m. with heavy rain currently falling in areas south and west of the city.
A UFC official said the plan is to try to begin the news conference at 9 p.m. The organization’s official social media account informed fans to not show up any earlier than 8:30.
Media were on busses from the area of the White House en route to the Lincoln Memorial when the drivers were alerted to turn around and return to the media center to wait for a break in the weather.
There is also still a heat advisory in effect.
UFC president and CEO Dana White has often stated he hates the idea of outdoor events because of the unpredictability of external factors like weather, but agreed to host Sunday’s Freedom 250 card as part of the celebration of the 250th birthday of America as a favor to his close friend President Donald Trump as well as the opportunity to make history.
But Friday evening’s events are confirmation of why he has been so resistant.
Sunday’s forecast includes a strong possibility of precipitation.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
