Officials with the Metropolitan Police Department are expected to give an update on a new counterterrorism initiative Friday afternoon, the department said in an email.
Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren will meet with media to provide an update on Project Meridian and how Metro is preparing for the summer, according to the email. The briefing is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m.
At a State of the Department address in February, Sheriff Kevin McMahill discussed Project Meridian, which he said would set up a 24/7 real-time analysis desk to expand Metro’s counterterrorism readiness. McMahill said the project will be financed by more than $1 million in private donations and will create a global intelligence network, allowing Metro staff to be stationed in and travel to other cities to work with other agencies facing similar terror threats.
“When instability rises overseas, whether it’s in the Middle East or other regions, it doesn’t stay there,” McMahill said during his address. “It travels through ideology, through online platforms.”
