The expulsion of a local student for posting pro-ICE messages at school that administrators deemed to be “racist” is very disturbing (Wednesday Review-Journal). Isn’t it the job of the school to teach all students that the brutal and horrific unconstitutional actions by ICE are un-American and that race is a cultural concept, not a scientifically valid genetically-based category? Was there no effort to teach that student that racist or white superiority ideology is a product of ignorance and hatred and a divisive tactic used to the detriment of people from all cultural backgrounds?
I am a proud liberal. I have attended anti-ICE protests many times. I was thrilled that students at that school protested. But the expulsion teaches the wrong lesson unless students advocate violence. Educators should focus on teaching students that equality is sacred here and was purposefully written into our Constitution.
