Prosecutors want to charge a 16-year-old accused of stabbing horses during a barrel racing event at South Point as an adult.
The Clark County district attorney’s office said in a Tuesday news release that prosecutors may file animal cruelty and destruction of property charges against the teenage girl who was competing in the event.
The Metropolitan Police Department previously said that three horses were injured with a knife inside an arena and Equestrian Center at the hotel casino on Saturday. The horses survived but were unable to continue competing; police said that was the girl’s motive for the attacks.
“After reviewing the allegations, the nature of the offenses, and the circumstances of the case, the District Attorney’s Office has determined that seeking certification to adult court is appropriate,” the release said.
The girl is due in Family Court on Thursday. The hearing to determine whether the case should proceed in the adult court will be scheduled for a later date.
