I just completed my first year with the Clark County School District as a substitute support staff (teacher’s aide). I am dismayed hearing about dropping student enrollment and dismal test scores, as reported in the Review-Journal. This year, I have been to 42 of the 255 elementary school in Clark County. Some several times. Overwhelmingly, what I have found are happy, engaged students and well-educated and prepared teachers with the facilities and tools needed for teaching.
These teachers/heroes have only so much time in the day to teach several subjects, as well as to maintain order in the face of a few students who disrupt an entire classroom. Daily lessons cannot be taught fully in a school day.
Parents and caregivers need to carry on these lessons at home for the children to grasp sometimes difficult concepts. I understand that parents themselves are struggling with more than one job and the stress of these difficult times. I urge parents and teachers to work together to educate our future generation. They are our hope.
