Boulder City Municipal Airport will get an air traffic control tower by 2028 thanks to receiving a $10 million federal grant.
Now the third busiest airport in Nevada with 52,000 annual operations, the Boulder City facility is a base for air tour operations for Lake Mead, the Grand Canyon and other nearby national parks.
The grant comes from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and her staff have been supportive of the project.
“We are incredibly grateful to receive this $10 million grant, which is a major milestone for the Boulder City Municipal Airport and the future of aviation safety in our community,” Airport Manager Marissa Adou said in a statement.
“This funding will make a significant contribution toward the overall cost of the new air traffic control tower and reflects the importance of this project to the safe and efficient operation of our airport,” she said. “The tower will enhance situational awareness, improve coordination of aircraft operations, and support the long-term safety of the airport for the benefit of pilots, passengers, businesses and the community as a whole.”
The Boulder City tower project was one of four to receive the maximum $10 million grant.
Officials said the tower project is in the design phase and the selection of a construction manager was completed in January to work with an architectural and engineering team. Construction is expected to begin by fall with the tower completed and operational by summer 2028.
“We’ve seen positive changes in the past decade: high demand for hangars, the growth of special, large-scale events in Southern Nevada and interest in aviation-related businesses on or near the airport,” Boulder City Manager Ned Thomas said in a statement. “News of this grant arrived right on schedule.”
