Dragon boat teams will take to the water Oct. 17 as the Lake Las Vegas Dragon Boat Festival arrives at the Village at Lake Las Vegas.
Sponsored by the city of Henderson, the festival is expected to draw athletes, spectators and community members for a full day of racing and celebration.
Teams from across the country and the Philippines will compete, and organizers emphasize the event is open and accessible for all, offering locals a chance to experience the fast-growing sport up close.
“This event truly has something for everyone,” said Bobbie McCue, organizer of the event and executive director of the Mad Dragon Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes dragon boat racing and supports charitable causes worldwide. “Whether you’re a dedicated dragon boater or a first-time paddler, we want you on the water or cheering from shore.”
“Events like the Dragon Boat Festival are a big part of what makes Lake Las Vegas such a vibrant destination,” said Cody Winterton, division president for Raintree Investment Corp., developers of Lake Las Vegas. “This festival has become an annual tradition for our community, and we look forward to hosting what promises to be an incredible event filled with energy, teamwork and celebration.”
Teams can compete in 11- or 21-person boats, each led by a drummer who sets the pace. The festival welcomes participants of all backgrounds including youth, para-athletes, families, schools and business groups, with a minimum paddling age of 14. All participants receive equipment, instruction and a practice session.
Spectators are encouraged to attend. Admission is free, with dining and entertainment available at the Village for a full day of activity on and off the water.
The event also supports nonprofit organizations making a positive impact locally and globally. The festival is produced by the Mad Dragon Foundation in partnership with Lake Las Vegas and in association with Paddle Vegas Dragon Boat Club and Pan Am Dragon Boat.
