A dominant spring high school sports season has given the Bishop Gorman boys teams another trophy.

Gorman won Class 5A state titles in baseball and boys golf, and were the 5S state runner-up in boys swimming, propelling the Gaels to win the inaugural Division I boys RJ Cup.

The Gaels racked up 53 points over the high school season, with their two state titles and state runner-up giving the program the title over Coronado (50 points).

Gorman also had four individual state champions — Colby Hutton (golf), Bryant Chung (swimming, 100-yard backstroke) and Azavier McDaniel (track and field, 100-meter dash and long jump) – giving the Gaels an additional point for each individual state champion to jump Coronado to win the RJ Cup.

The RJ Cup rewards points for teams for state championships (10 points), state runners-up (seven), region championships (five) and region runners-up (three).

Teams get points once for their highest finish in the postseason, and receive one additional point for each individual state champion. Points are not awarded for relay races in track or swimming.

In Division I girls, Coronado, after a dominant fall season, finished with 56 points to win the RJ Cup over Gorman (36 points) and Faith Lutheran (35).

The Cougars won their fifth straight 5A girls swimming team title and claimed individual titles from Ana Schulz (100-yard freestyle) and Grace Carrington (50-yard freestyle). In track and field, Coronado was the 5A Southern Region runner-up and Jiselle Dudley won the individual state title in the 300-meter hurdles.

Clark won the Division II boys title after the Chargers were the 4A state runner-up in boys swimming and golf to finish with 38 points. The Chargers also had three individual state champions in 4A swimming to help them jump SLAM! Nevada for the top spot. SLAM! Nevada finished second with 29 points and Sky Pointe (26) was third.

Sierra Vista held on to win the Division II girls title with 23 points over Mojave (20 points). The Mountain Lions held the lead after the winter season and got an individual state championship from Aubrey Tangonan in pole vault at the 4A state meet.

Boulder City rallied to claim the Division III boys and girls titles. In the boys title race, Boulder City had 45 points to finish ahead of Moapa Valley (35). The girls had 36 points to edge The Meadows (32), Pahranagat Valley (30) and Virgin Valley (27).

The Eagles won boys team state titles in swimming, with three individual state champions, and volleyball. They were the state runners-up in baseball and region runner-up in boys golf.

The Eagles were the girls 3A state runners-up in swimming and claimed two track individual state titles in what turned out to be the tightest of the RJ Cup battles among the top teams in each division.
