In Sunday’s Review-Journal, eviction lawyer Calder Babroy said the judicial system is clearly weighted toward landlords. I am a Clark County landlord, and I powerfully disagree.
I have been a landlord here since 1996. I have evicted eight tenants — all for non-payment — in that 30-year period. Reasons for non-payment: Buying a $50,000 pickup truck, addicted to bottle service at night clubs.
The tenants I evicted were at least two months behind in rent. They were mad I was evicting them, so they:
■ Left the water on and flooded the house the day the constable was scheduled to come. I had to repair the house and pay a huge water bill, costing me $9,000.
■ Smoked marijuana (before it was legal) and let the seeds burn my floors and kitchen countertops, which I had to replace, costing me $10,000.
■ Poured gasoline, which killed a 10-year-old tree. Priceless?
The eviction process, which I have to pay for and costs about $1,000, takes at least another month. Could you live without a paycheck for three months? Because my mortgagee, HOA, insurer and Clark County tax collector all want their money.
I run a business, not the Catholic charities. Non-paying tenants need to go.
