A judge ordered a three- to 20-year prison sentence Monday for a teen who killed a child in a wrong-way crash, a harsher sentence than prosecutors had agreed to recommend.
Henrry Norberto, 17, pleaded guilty to a fatal DUI count in February.
Norberto was driving a Ford pickup into oncoming traffic on Interstate 15 near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in June when he crashed into a truck occupied by Brandon Martinez and his father, Glenn Martinez.
Brandon, who was 10, died at the scene.
Prosecutors and the defense agreed to recommend a three- to 15-year prison sentence as part of Norberto’s plea deal.
District Judge Mary Kay Holthus said she tries to respect plea negotiations.
In this case, though, “It’s too big,” she said. “He’s too young.”
