UNLV held on to defeat Wyoming 73-70 on Wednesday in the first round of the Mountain West men’s basketball tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Kimani Hamilton scored 23 points to lead the eighth-seeded Rebels, who had a 16-point first-half lead, then relied on Hamilton’s heroics to seal the game late.
No. 9 Wyoming was led by Gavin Gores’ 15 points.
The win broke a streak of struggles in the conference tournament for the Rebels, who hadn’t won a game in the tournament over a team that wasn’t Air Force in the past 10 years.
The Rebels will advance to the quarterfinals against No. 1 Utah State at noon Thursday.
