The Las Vegas Raiders are clearing out space on the roster in advance of what figures to be a very busy free agency period.
Hours after reports surfaced that the team intends to release starting quarterback Geno Smith in the coming days, they formally cut ties with veteran offensive lineman Alex Cappa.
The 31-year-old signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Raiders last offseason, but didn’t figure to be part of the team’s plans moving forward.
Cappa didn’t make much of an impact on one of the worst offensive lines in the league despite appearing in 17 games and starting eight.
He was coming off a down season with the Cincinnati Bengals, but had won a Super Bowl blocking for Raiders minority owner Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Cappa will carry a dead cap figure of $1 million.
The Raiders are expected to target the offensive line heavily in free agency.
