I read the headline in the RJ sports section announcing the retirement of Ryan Reaves. The announcement caused me to reflect on his time with the Knights.
All of my reactions are from seeing him play, from interviews and articles written about him. And from just observing him react with other players and people. To me, he was an average player who did not score a lot, did not skate particularly fast and all in all was not an outstanding hockey player.
Yet, he seemed to exhibit qualities that seemed to draw people to him. Other players seemed to enjoy being around him and to trust his play. He was a master at keeping the puck against the boards until he was able to pass it to another player, or just stall the play until ready to move it. A seemingly insignificant thing but huge in the outcome of games.
He was loyal to his teammates and always rushed to their aid. I never saw him react in a brutal manner while he protected his brother players. He was always there for helping others as shown by coming back to help raise money via the events he played in against others, cops, firemen, etc. He never seemed to leave Las Vegas even when traded.
My impression of Mr. Reaves is that he is a hard working, trusted, loyal and dependable person who will be there when things get tough.
I know many people, but have few that I would call “friend” and know would be there for me when needed. I think Mr. Reaves is that type of person to those who know him. I wish only the best for him as he enters life after hockey. You are one of the “good” ones.” Here’s one for you!
