The Review Journal Sept. 10 editorial lauds the Henderson City Council for a commitment to fiscal responsibility after it terminated the Retiree Health Insurance Premium Assistance program. If fiscal responsibility means voiding a contract and going against your word, then the council deserves this praise. By following this logic, people who don’t pay their credit card bills would also be responsible and virtuous.
However, many of the people who were induced to retire early with the promise of this benefit may not agree. Those people retired early, at a reduced pension, in exchange for the insurance assistance. The City Council has the right to end this program for all future retirees, but to deceive the people who have already left the city is a sad commentary on their beliefs.
