A single mother and her sons have nowhere to go after a fire in the east valley destroyed their home and belongings Wednesday, her son said.

Dylon Walters, 15, said he was making lunch in the upstairs unit of a two-story home around 3 p.m. when he saw tall flames coming from a truck parked beneath the staircase to his front door.

Minutes later, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue crews responded to the home on Sacramento Drive, near East Charleston Boulevard and Interstate 11, and had largely extinguished the fire by 3:30 p.m., the department said.

Dylon, his mother, Megan Selvage, and his brother, Ricky, had escaped, along with residents of the downstairs unit.

One person was injured and taken to University Medical Center, while a firefighter was “transported out of an abundance of care,” Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Three cats and a dog died in the fire, the Facebook post said.

Gage Walters, the older brother of Dylon and Ricky, said the dog that died was his mother’s bull terrier puppy. She tried to return for the dog, he said, but the stairs to the upstairs unit had collapsed.

The family also lost clothing, school supplies and furniture, he said.

“They are borderline homeless,” Walters said.

Gage Walters said he does not live at the home but started an online fundraiser to help the family recover and rebuild.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Las Vegas city spokesperson Jordan Moore said.
