LETTER: Missing the fundamental point about feminism

Regarding Victor Joecks’ Aug. 16 column, “In a world of AOCs, be a Leavitt,” I felt compelled to respond to its logical deficiencies and how this debate misses the fundamental point of feminism.

Feminism roots in self-determination and bodily autonomy, not prescribed choices. Claiming that feminism pushes women to abandon families masks a double-standard that breeds resentment against a system that devalues women’s choices. While ambitious men are praised, ambitious women are branded as traitors to an imaginary biological purpose.

Biology dictates neither a woman’s fulfillment as a mother nor professional capability. Romanticizing domesticity relies on the myth that motherhood guarantees happiness and well-being, which sociological studies refute. Resentment and lack of volition always yield rebellion, and women will inevitably reject systems that steal autonomy.

Feminism isn’t exclusive to women who pursue careers or choose not to have children. It also encompasses women such as Karoline Leavitt who embrace traditional family lives.

That being said, expecting women to exit the workforce ignores economic realities. For the majority of American families, single-income living is unsustainable. Between rising housing and child-care costs, many women work because their financial contributions are essential to family survival due to policies from the very administration encouraging traditionalism.

Limiting womanhood to a competition and rigid choice between strict archetypes ignores economic necessity and individual freedom. Women’s professional contributions are vital. Rather than pushing them into pre-approved molds, we should champion policies offering every woman the stability and freedom to choose their own lifestyle.
