Quarterback Chance Thomas’ time with the Bishop Gorman football team lasted two games.
Thomas, a Kansas commit who transferred to Gorman from Western (Anaheim, California) during the spring for his senior season, has transferred out of the program, Bishop Gorman coach Brent Browner confirmed to the Review-Journal on Saturday.
Thomas’ agent confirmed that the player will attend Loudoun Sports Academy in Virginia. It’s the second high-profile transfer out of Gorman this week after last Monday wide receiver Gavin Honore transferred back to Mater Dei after he was not cleared by the NIAA, according to reports.
Thomas warmed up with Gorman prior to its 38-28 win over St. John Bosco (California) on Friday and was on the sidelines but did not play in the game. The Gaels started Ace Amina against the top-ranked Braves and the junior played the whole game, completing 15 of 24 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns.
Thomas, listed at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, played in two series in Gorman’s 41-0 win on Aug. 14 against Losee where the right-hander completed both of his passes for 21 yards and added a rushing touchdown.
“(Amina) had won the job,” Browner said Friday night after the Gaels defeated St. John Bosco 38-28. “We had to let him go out there and play. He did what he had to do, managed the ball, managed the clock, ran when he needed. He matured a lot in this game.
“(Amina) made a big stride in his overall development after this game. It’s a big game, a tied game coming under pressure, making some pretty good throws. You saw a maturity level of that kid that we needed at that time.”
Thomas threw for 3,327 yards and 33 touchdowns with a 71.5 completion percentage, and seven rushing touchdowns last season in California.
The question coming into the season was if Gorman, ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps, would start the Thomas or Amina, who has been in the program for three years. Amina started against Losee and both quarterbacks alternated possessions.
It was a possibility that both Thomas and Amina could play against St. John Bosco, but after the Gaels overcame losing a 21-point deficit to beat the Braves, Browner confirmed that Amina had won the starting job.
“We had both options on the table, depending on how they played,” Browner said Friday night. “We weren’t going to make a decision where if you messed up one time, you’re out. We let (Amina) ride it out (against St. John Bosco). If it wasn’t working out, then we were going to make a change if we had to, but we trusted and believed in him. He did exactly we thought was going to do.”
Honore, a senior, played last season at Mater Dei and practiced with the Gaels in the lead up to the start of their season and was with the team in its season opener. On Aug. 17, Honore announced on his social media account he was transferring back to Mater Dei. Reports said Honore was immediately eligible to play for Mater Dei.
Gorman plays at Mater Dei on Sept. 18.
