Bishop Gorman’s football team can now turn its attention to its national showdown with California power St. John Bosco.

The Gaels, ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps, opened their season with a 41-0 victory over Losee on Friday at Fertitta Field in a 5A Southern League contest.

The game was called at halftime because of inclement weather. The first quarter was delayed by more than 90 minutes because of a lightning delay.

As the final seconds ticked off in the first half, more lightning hit the area, and the game was called at halftime.

“We’d be under another lightning delay again for 45 minutes, so once we hit the running clock, I think we always have to be smart with kids and what’s best for them,” Gorman coach Brent Browner said. “Everybody wanted to play, (Losee) wanted to play, it was just should we wait two more hours to play a game?”

The win sets up the third meeting between Gorman (1-0) and St. John Bosco, ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps, at 7 p.m. Friday at Fertitta Field. Gorman is 2-0 against St. John Bosco.

On Friday, Gorman played both of its quarterbacks — senior Kansas commit Chance Thomas and junior Ace Amina.

Amina completed all four of his passes for 70 yards with a touchdown in three series played. Thomas completed both of his passes for 21 yards and added a 1-yard rushing touchdown in two series played.

The Gaels also showed off their ground attack with Noah Cole, Corey Hinton and Trey Washington each scoring a rushing touchdown.

Amina’s touchdown pass came on a 11-yard connection to freshman Michael Blackmond for the game’s first score, putting the Gaels up 7-0.

UNLV commit Azavier McDaniel, on the ensuing Losee possession, came up with an interception and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Shortly after the interception, the game went into a lightning delay with 3:30 left in the first quarter and Gorman leading.

Cole (7 yards), Hinton (2 yards) and Washington (27 yards) all added their rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Hinton led all rushers with 43 yards on three carries.

Thomas scored on his quarterback run in the second quarter and put the Gaels up 34-0. Washington’s run with under two minutes before halftime triggered the running clock.

Gorman’s defense held Losee to negative-14 total yards. The lone bright spot for the Lions came when the team recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff, but Gorman forced a three-and-out.

Losee, which is in the 5A classification, is part of the seven private and charter schools that remained in the NIAA after 30 CCSD schools moved to independent status.
