Law enforcement personnel and the public are paying their final respects Friday morning at the funeral of slain Metropolitan Police Department officer Austin Abdelnabi, who was gunned down in the line of duty last week.
Abdelnabi, 30, had responded to a call of a man waving a gun near the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue on the afternoon of Aug. 4, before Angel Lucas-Lindsey, 21, opened fire near the 5400 block of Mountain Vista Street and Interstate 11, striking him eight times.
Last Friday, hundreds honored the memory of Abdelnabi, a decorated Marine who originally hailed from South Carolina, at a vigil, where speaker after speaker lauded his bravery, passion and commitment to service that had left an everlasting impact on those he touched.
The funeral procession left Palm Mortuary-Jones at 1600 S. Jones Blvd. at 9 a.m., traveling toward downtown before heading south past Harry Reid International Airport and cutting east on Interstate 215 toward the Central Church, 1001 New Beginnings Drive in Henderson.
Gov. Joe Lombardo, who previously oversaw Metro as Clark County sheriff, also ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff ahead of Abdelnabi’s funeral.
“Officer Abdelnabi made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country and his community, and Nevada will never forget his courage,” Lombardo said in a press release. “He dedicated his life to protecting others, and his loss is felt deeply by all of us. We will continue to honor his memory, stand with his family and loved ones, and support the brothers and sisters in law enforcement who served alongside him.”
