Looking for some rain today? You may have to endure the smoky, hazy conditions first.

There’s a 20 to 30 percent chance of monsoon storms striking Southern Nevada on Tuesday, said Ashlery Nickerson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Las Vegas.

She said the mountains surrounding Las Vegas could see some showers first before they “blow off into the valley.” Tuesday’s forecast high is 104 degrees, the average for mid-August. Tuesday will be the first day that the valley will not be under an extreme heat warning since July 29. The warning started July 30 and was extended several times, finally expiring Monday night.

There’s a better chance of rain for Wednesday, about 30 to 40 percent, Nickerson said. Wednesday’s forecast high is 102 before a significant cooldown begins Thursday, with a high in the upper 90s expected. The last time Harry Reid International Airport recorded a high below 100 degrees was July 17, when it saw 97, the “coolest” day of the month.

Dust advisory again?

Expect to see more “dirty-looking air” in the valley Tuesday morning, Nickerson said, as windblown dust from Arizona thunderstorms sticks around for at least part of the day.

On Monday, the intrusion of dust into the valley’s airspace prompted a dust advisory from the Clark County Environment & Sustainability’s Division of Air Quality. Henderson Executive Airport reported a visibility of 1.75 miles on Monday afternoon, the weather service said.

Officials said the advisory may need to be extended into Tuesday.

Cooling stations

Clark County has activated cooling stations at community centers, libraries and other buildings across the valley through Tuesday.

The cooling stations’ hours vary depending on the location. The stations include several locations in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson.

The stations are open to anyone in need of respite from the heat, the county said. Additional information can be found at the Southern Nevada Homelessness Continuum of Care’s website at helphopehome.org/get-help/.
