LETTER: Another debate about daylight savings time

Re: Your Monday front-page article on daylight saving time:

Once again, we must engage in this tiresome debate and hand-wringing about adjusting our clocks. Never mind that we Nevadans travel all over this country and the world adjusting ourselves to seeing the sun rise and set at a different time, soldiering on nevertheless.

“Those who cannot remember their past are condemned to repeat it,” wrote Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana. Surely, Nevada Sens. Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez-Masto remember our history. President Richard Nixon put the country on year-round daylight saving time in 1974. (I lived through it.) And, by the way, at that time we were all screaming about gas prices because of an OPEC oil embargo. After just a few months the outcry against it was so great that Congress repealed the act later that same year.

This is becoming another political football. Supposedly most people don’t like the current schedule of changing our clocks. Most of us don’t particularly like paying taxes, but we pay them anyway. And, as far as statistics showing various adverse biological, medical, economic and psychological effects of changing our clocks: well, there are adverse effects to everything we do. But we do them nevertheless.
